How does return status triage connect to review quality?
I see how a status tracker helps deadlines, but I do not see why it matters for the quality of the tax return itself.
Status triage protects review quality because it shows whether the file is actually ready for the next level of work. A return marked "in review" should not simply mean that the preparer ran out of time. It should mean the workpapers, source documents, open items, and unusual positions are ready for reviewer attention.
For example, a return should not move to review if:
- major source documents are missing,
- the return does not tie to the workpaper totals,
- unusual tax positions have no note,
- the prior-year change is unexplained,
- open items are mixed into completed work.
Status triage forces the team to distinguish "assigned," "blocked," "prepared," "review-ready," and "filed or extended." Those labels help prevent rushed review from becoming a substitute for actual support.
