Suppose Pine Harbor Accounting has two candidates studying revenue recognition. Candidate A rewrites 18 pages of notes. Candidate B closes the book and explains the five-step model from memory, then answers 40 mixed questions and reviews every miss. Candidate B will usually discover weak points faster because the study session produces feedback. That feedback is what improves exam performance.

A balanced routine works well: preview the topic, attempt MCQs, review explanations, make a short error log, then revisit the same rules two or three days later. Simulations should not be saved until the last week because they teach document navigation and multi-step reasoning.

Active recall feels slower because mistakes are visible. That is the point. If you cannot retrieve the rule during practice, you probably cannot retrieve it during the exam.
