The EA should disengage professionally, in writing, and with attention to deadlines and client property.

Suppose Summit Tax Advisory has a client with years of late filings, incomplete bank records, and repeated demands to "just estimate" business expenses. The EA asks for records three times and receives inconsistent spreadsheets. If the client will not provide support, the practitioner should not prepare a return based on guesses. A disengagement letter can identify the scope ended, upcoming deadlines, records returned, and recommendation to seek other assistance.
