What is the intuition behind cost of liquidation when a position is marked at mid but sold at bid?

I can memorize the wording around mid, bid, and ask, but I still lose the logic when a question turns it into liquidation cost. I need a simple mental model for why the cost appears and how to think about it under exam pressure.
