Standard I(B) — Independence and Objectivity — requires that professionals maintain independence in judgment. Gifts from clients, suppliers, or anyone with whom the firm does business can compromise that independence if they're significant enough to influence behavior.

CFA Institute guidance:
1. Modest, token gifts (lunches, logo items, small thank-you gestures) are generally acceptable
2. Gifts of substantial value require firm disclosure and, typically, firm approval
3. Cash or cash equivalents are almost always prohibited
4. Gifts tied to specific business outcomes (a trade, a recommendation) are prohibited regardless of value

Most firms set explicit thresholds: e.g., below $200 requires logging only, $200-$500 requires supervisor approval, above $500 requires compliance review and client notification. Concert tickets worth $400 in our scenario fall into the 'review required' category at most firms.

But VALUE isn't the only test. Consider context:

- Client recently lost a performance dispute — gift could be seen as influencing her assessment
- Gift arrived two weeks before a contract renewal decision
- No business development purpose (client is already a client)

Contrast with an industry conference where a vendor sponsors a hospitality suite. Attending is permissible — educational context, many professionals present, no individual quid pro quo.

The test: would a reasonable observer believe this gift could influence your judgment? If yes, decline, disclose, or require client to reroute through approved channels. Gifts you cannot openly discuss with your employer are gifts you should not accept.
