Albright's Brazilian subsidiary has net assets of BRL 180M. Albright borrows BRL 180M via a same-currency loan as the hedging instrument (non-derivative hedges are allowed for NI hedges). As BRL depreciates against USD, the subsidiary's translated net assets fall (translation loss in CTA), but the BRL liability also shrinks in USD terms (FX gain). The FX gain on the BRL loan goes to CTA, offsetting the translation loss.

Entries each reporting period mark the BRL loan to spot USD: Dr. BRL Loan 2,400,000 / Cr. CTA (OCI) 2,400,000. The translation loss from consolidating the sub is Dr. CTA (OCI) 2,380,000 / Cr. Investment in Sub 2,380,000. Net CTA impact: $20,000 residual — the ineffective portion or spot-forward differential.

The CTA balance only releases to P&L when the foreign subsidiary is sold or substantially liquidated.
