At fictional Community Arts Alliance, the executive director wants the organization to pay for a resort trip described as networking. The enrolled agent should ask for the agenda, attendees, business purpose, board approval, receipts, and how the trip advances the exempt mission. If the trip is primarily personal or lavish, it can create tax and governance concerns.

For an exempt organization, private benefit and excess benefit transaction rules may matter. Compensation or perks provided to insiders must be reasonable and properly approved. Poor documentation can also create reporting problems on the annual exempt organization return.

Substantiation is essential. Travel expenses should show dates, location, business purpose, and relationship to the organization's activities. Meals and entertainment limitations may also apply depending on facts.
