Cost is accrued at sale as a warranty expense and warranty liability. A service-type warranty provides additional services beyond defect-fixing and is a separate performance obligation — revenue must be allocated to it and recognized over the service period. Example: Taluja Laptops sells a ProBook for $1,820 with a standard 12-month warranty (assurance-type) and an optional 36-month extended warranty priced at $210 (service-type). On a bundled $2,030 sale: $1,820 goes to laptop revenue immediately (plus accrued warranty expense of, say, 2.5% = $45.50), and $210 is deferred and amortized straight-line over 36 months = $5.83/month. After 8 months of the extended warranty, cumulative extended-warranty revenue = $46.64; deferred revenue balance = $163.36. Key indicators of service-type: customer can purchase the warranty separately, it extends beyond the legal minimum, or it provides services beyond fixing defects (accidental damage coverage, periodic maintenance). If the warranty can only be purchased bundled and just covers latent defects, it's assurance-type.
