What if the audit-year books are worse than current books?
A partnership cleaned up its bookkeeping after the year under audit. Can the clean current books help answer the audit?
Current clean books can show improved controls, but they do not prove the audited-year numbers. The audit response still needs support for the examined year.
Use the later improvements carefully:
- Explain that the partnership changed processes after the audited year.
- Do not substitute current categories for prior-year source records.
- Reconstruct the examined year from examined-year documents.
- Identify unresolved items plainly.
- Tie the examined-year reconstruction to the filed Form 1065.
That approach is candid and useful. It avoids the trap of rewriting history just because the client now has better accounting.
