Conceptual soundness review (CSR) evaluates whether the model's theoretical foundation, design choices, and methodology are appropriate for its intended use. It's qualitative and judgment-heavy but must be documented rigorously.

Key review areas:

1. Theoretical basis. Is the chosen framework (structural credit model, CAPM, Black-Scholes, GARCH) consistent with the underlying risk dynamics? For retail PD: is logistic regression vs gradient boosting justified given sample size, interpretability needs, and feature mix?

2. Assumption appropriateness. Every model has assumptions — normal returns, constant correlations, no jumps, stationary parameters. The CSR asks: where do these hold, where don't they, and are the violations material?

3. Data quality and representativeness. Was the development sample large enough? Does it span a full credit cycle? Are there selection biases (survivorship, data cleaning)? Is the sample aligned with intended-use portfolio?

4. Feature selection. Are the included variables economically meaningful? Are omitted variables likely to be relevant? Multicollinearity concerns?

5. Estimation and calibration. Methodology (MLE, Bayesian, matching), treatment of outliers, handling of missing data.

6. Limitations documentation. Every model has bounds of validity. CSR ensures these are stated explicitly and known to users.

7. Alignment with use. A model built for monthly stress testing may be unfit for intraday VaR — use must match design.

The CSR finds the underlying flood-damage functions derive from historical US data (Katrina, Harvey) but the portfolio is 40% in emerging markets with different building codes and drainage. Without this CSR finding, model users might have over-relied on outputs for markets outside the valid domain.
