At fictional Briarstone College, a staff auditor is assigned to purchasing. Last year's workpaper tested 25 invoices for approval signatures. Instead of copying the sample, the auditor asks four questions: What objective is this control supporting? What risk changed this year? Is the control still designed the same way? What evidence would prove it operated during the period?

Those questions may reveal that purchasing moved to a new approval workflow, the dollar threshold changed, and emergency purchases increased. The old procedure may still be relevant, but it needs revision. The auditor might now test workflow approval logs, emergency override reports, and vendor change access.

Supervision matters too. A good senior should explain why procedures exist, review early work, and help staff connect evidence to conclusions. If a staff member does not understand the purpose of a step, they should ask before completing a beautiful but meaningless workpaper.
