Suppose fictional Brookmere Foods has a purchasing process where managers say all vendor changes are reviewed. The system owner insists the control works, but invoice exceptions keep increasing. A technically strong auditor might know to test access rights and change logs. A strong internal auditor also asks process owners to walk through a recent vendor change, listens for handoffs, and notices that one emergency path bypasses review.

The CIA exam often tests this through scenario judgment. The best answer is usually not the most aggressive answer. It is the one that preserves objectivity, gathers sufficient information, and keeps communication constructive. For example, if a client disagrees with a preliminary observation, the auditor should review the evidence, clarify criteria, and seek additional facts before escalating.

Treat soft skills as audit tools: interviewing, facilitation, negotiation, report writing, and conflict management.
