Student loan ABS (SLABS) pool either federally-guaranteed FFELP loans (legacy program, pre-2010) or private student loans. Their oddities stem from borrower behavior and government policy:

1. Extended maturity: loans often run 15-25 years, with deferment periods of 0.5-4 years where borrowers pay nothing. SLABS can have 30-year legal final maturities.
2. Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans reduce required payments to a percentage of discretionary income, sometimes to $0. This dramatically extends cash flow.
3. Forbearance: borrowers can pause payments during unemployment or hardship. Collections drop but interest still accrues.
4. Default-and-consolidate: federal loans can be rehabilitated and re-consolidated, creating non-standard prepayment patterns.
5. For FFELP, the federal guarantee covers 97-100% of defaulted principal, so credit risk is near-zero — the real risk is servicing errors breaking the guarantee.

Structural implications: SLABS have serious extension risk. A FFELP trust expected to amortize over 12 years may still have 5% of the balance outstanding after 18 years, pushing investors past legal final maturity. Several 2005-2007 vintage SLABS were downgraded by Moody's in 2015-2018 not for credit reasons but for failing to pay down in time.

For private SLABS, credit loss projections depend on school type, borrower credit score, and cosigner presence. Expected CNL ranges 5-15%, covered by subordination and excess spread.

For FRM, remember: FFELP SLABS are extension risk, private SLABS are credit risk. Different risks, same asset class label.
