The first step is separating tax liability from withholding and then breaking the total into components. Many people see one annual number and assume it is all federal income tax, when it may also include Social Security, Medicare, state income tax, and sometimes local withholding. A large total can still be mathematically normal once you split it apart.

Example: Meridian Taxworks has a client earning $85,000 of wages in California. Suppose federal income tax is projected at $8,200, Social Security tax at $5,270, Medicare tax at $1,233, and California withholding at $3,950. The total is $18,653. If the employee also has a $2,100 annual bonus with supplemental withholding, the combined figure can easily move above $20,000. That still does not mean the taxpayer owes $20,000 in April. Much of it may already be withheld during the year.

A clean EA approach is to ask four questions. What is federal income tax? What is payroll tax? What is state tax? How much has already been withheld? Once those boxes are separated, the panic usually fades and you can tell whether the issue is real underwithholding or just a confusing payroll display. Practice more in our EA question bank.
