When is it optimal to exercise an American call option early, and why do dividends matter?
I've been told that it is never optimal to exercise an American call early on a non-dividend-paying stock. But for dividend-paying stocks, early exercise can be optimal just before the ex-dividend date. I don't fully understand the logic. Can someone walk through the reasoning?
